Tenaculum
Traumatic instrument used to grasp and hold tissue (most commonly the cervix).
Transabdominal
Through the abdomen.
Transurethral
Passed through, or placed in, the urethra.
Transverse
Horizontal planes that divide the body into superior and inferior planes. (Divides upper and lower part of body).
Tubal ligation
The tying and cutting of the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy.
Tubal ostia
Opening connecting the uterus and the fallopian tube.
Two stage voiding
Interrupted urine flow, resulting in urine flow that starts, stops, and starts again.
Ultrasound
Inaudible sound in a very high frequency range creating a readable image.
Urethra
The membranous canal conveying urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body.
Urethral catheter
A tube inserted through the urine canal and into the bladder to allow urine to flow out of the body.
Urethroscope
An instrument used to view the inside of the urine canal.
Urethroscopy
A procedure to look inside the urine canal using a urethroscope.
Urethrotomy
A procedure to enlarge the diameter of the urethra by making a series of small cuts through the strictured area.
Urge incontinence
Type of urinary incontinence that occurs suddenly and usually short in duration.
Urgency
A strong desire to urinate immediately.
Urinalysis
Test that examines the urine for signs of infection, blood or other abnormalities.
Urinary
Pertaining to the organs that produce and remove urine from the body.
Urinary bladder
Hollow, distensible, muscular organ that serves as a receptacle for urine; located behind the pubic bone and protected by the pelvis.
Urinary incontinence
Involuntary loss of urine; decreased ability for bladder control.
Urinary sphincter
Ring of muscle at the neck of the bladder that grips and relaxes to control urine flow.
Urinate
To release urine from the bladder.
Urine
Fluid that carries waste products out of the body.
Urodynamic test
A test that examines bladder and sphincter function; may involve inserting a small tube into the bladder or using X-rays to see the bladder.
Uroflowmetry
A device used to determine the rate that urine can be emptied from the bladder.
Uterine perforation
Hole made in the wall of the uterus during placement of an instrument.
Uterine Sound
Instrument used to measure the depth of the uterus from the fundus to the external os of the cervix.
Uterus
The hollow muscular reproductive organ in the female.
Vagina
A collapsible tube 7-8 cm long, composed of smooth muscle. The vagina constitutes an essential part of the reproductive tract because of the following: 1. Receives the seminal fluid from the male. 2. Serves as the lower part of the birth canal.
Voiding
Urinating.
